The Legacy of Ayah Paul Abine: A Champion for Justice and Human Rights in Cameroon

On December 25, 2024, Cameroon lost a prominent figure in its legal and political landscape with the passing of Ayah Paul Abine at the age of 74 in Buea. His life was marked by a steadfast commitment to justice, human rights, and democracy. However, many believe that his death was hastened by the government's actions, reflecting a troubling pattern of persecution against dissenting voices in the country.

AYAH PAUL

Born in 1950 in Ngali, Akwaya Subdivision in Manyu, Ayah Paul Abine emerged as a significant voice for the English-speaking community in Cameroon. He graduated from the National School of Administration and Magistracy (ENAM) in Yaoundé in 1976, laying the foundation for a distinguished career in law and politics.Initially a member of the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM), Ayah Paul became increasingly critical of the government. He resigned from CPDM in 2011 after demanding that internal elections be conducted in the ruling CPDM party, but he was face with serious resistance from the big wigs of the party. He founded the People's Action Party (PAP), and ran for president against Paul Biya in 2011. He also strongly opposed the 2008 constitutional amendment that removed presidential term limits. His political journey was marked by a commitment to reform and a desire for a more democratic Cameroon.

Ayah Paul was not only a politician but also a fierce advocate for human rights. He was arrested in January 2017 for advocating for federalism and spent eight months in Kondengui Maximum Security Prison. Released by presidential decree in August 2017, he continued to criticize the government's handling of the Anglophone Crisis. Unfortunately, he faced severe repercussions, including frozen bank accounts and a blocked pension, which he has yet to receive till this day.His courage in standing up against oppression made him a symbol of resistance for many, and his struggles highlighted the systemic issues faced by political dissidents in Cameroon.

Ayah Paul Abine is remembered as a champion of democracy and human rights—a courageous critic of the regime who fought tirelessly for justice and equity in Cameroon. His passing on Christmas Day marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations who strive for a better Cameroon. The circumstances surrounding his death and the unresolved issues regarding his pension serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those who dare to challenge authority in the country.
