Senator Mbella Moki: Prioritizing Roads Over Lives in Cameroon’s Conflict Zones

The political landscape in Cameroon, particularly within the ruling CPDM party, has come under scrutiny, especially regarding the actions of Senator Mbella Moki. His recent behavior raises significant questions about his commitment to the pressing issues impacting the people of the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon.

For over eight years, these regions have been engulfed in a brutal conflict that has resulted in countless casualties and suffering. Yet, Senator Moki has failed to hold government ministers accountable for the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis. Instead, his inquiries have been focused on the condition of the roads in these areas. This raises the question: why did he prioritize infrastructure over the lives of his constituents when there can't be any development during war?

Moki's neglect of crucial issues such as the ongoing war suggests a disconnect from the realities faced by the people he represents. Using the roads for over five years without addressing their condition in relation to the broader crisis reflects poorly on his leadership and priorities.

The timing of Moki's recent criticisms regarding road conditions, which surfaced only after the police Boss publicly condemned these same roads, during his visit to the southwest region is telling. His visit to the Southwest region appears more as a public relations move than a genuine effort to engage with the pressing issues. This raises further concerns about his authenticity and commitment to the welfare of the people.

While road conditions are indeed important, they pale in comparison to the human toll of the ongoing conflict. Lives are being lost daily, families are being shattered, and communities are being torn apart. By failing to address these critical issues, Senator Moki is not only neglecting his responsibilities but also betraying the trust of his constituents.

Senator Mbella Moki’s actions serve as a stark reminder of the double standards that can exist within political leadership. It is imperative for representatives to prioritize the well-being of their people above all else. As the conflict continues to take lives in the Northwest and Southwest regions, the expectation is for leaders like Moki to step up, confront the pressing issues, and advocate passionately for the needs of their constituents. The people deserve authentic representation and a government that prioritizes their lives over political expediency.

United Nations Committee Against Torture is currently holding its eighty-first session in Geneva from October 28 to November 22, 2024. Simon Ekpa, a Finnish-Nigerian activist and self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, was recently arrested in Finland alongside four others on suspicion of terrorism-related activities.
