Initially, her husband and son were also implicated in the case, but the charges against them were eventually dropped due to lack of evidence.

The theft has garnered significant attention from the South African media, leaving many individuals astonished and incredulous at the magnitude of the incident. Moreover, this case has sparked inquiries into the efficacy of internal controls and the role of auditors in identifying fraudulent activities within establishments across the country. Steenkamp's sentence stands as one of the lengthiest ever imposed in South Africa for financial offenses. The presiding judge emphasized that Steenkamp displayed no remorse for her actions and continued to lead a luxurious lifestyle even after being apprehended. Additionally, the judge underscored that the severity of the sentence was intended to serve as a deterrent to potential fraudsters, conveying a clear message that such illicit acts would not be tolerated.

The sentence has triggered a discussion regarding the equity of the verdict, as certain individuals contend that it is excessively severe. Conversely, it has been highlighted by others that Steenkamp's actions had a substantial effect on the organization and its staff, leading to numerous job losses due to the theft. Additionally, there has been criticism regarding the lack of accountability for Steenkamp's husband and son, who were allegedly implicated in the crime.
