FORMAL CENTRAL BANK GOVERNOR IN BURUNDI ARRESTED

Dieudonné Murengerantwari, formerly in charge of overseeing the operations of Burundi's central bank, has been apprehended under the suspicion of engaging in corrupt practices. The Ministry of Justice has lodged a series of allegations against him, including actions that hindered the smooth functioning of the national economy, participation in passive corruption, involvement in money laundering activities, and the misappropriation of public resources. Murengerantwari assumed the position of leading Burundi's central bank in August last year, with a planned tenure of five years. However, his presidency was abruptly terminated by President Évariste Ndayishimiye on Sunday, and Édouard Normand Bigendako was appointed as his successor.

The lawyer general, Leonard Manirakiza, has expressed that the accusations against Murengerantwari are temporary as investigations proceed. Furthermore, he mentioned that Murengerantwari is receiving lawful treatment while he stays detained. Murengerantwari has not provided any response to the accusations against him. The apprehension arises amidst firm action against dishonesty in Burundi. In recent times, the nation has been tormented by political turmoil and financial adversity.

Burundi stands as one of the most destitute nations globally, grappling with a yearly per capita income of below $300. The nation has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, witnessing a substantial surge in both infections and fatalities over the past few months.
