Mangosuthu Buthelezi, a prominent and controversial South African leader, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at the age of 95. Buthelezi, a Zulu minister, and political figure was best known as the founder and leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), a Zulu nationalist party that played a significant role in South African politics during the apartheid era.

Born into a Zulu royal family in 1928, Buthelezi pursued his education at the University of Natal and later at the University of Oxford. After completing his studies at Oxford, he returned to South Africa and entered the political arena.

In 1975, Buthelezi established the IFP, a party that opposed the African National Congress (ANC) and its policy of majority rule, fearing it would result in the subjugation of Zulus by other ethnic groups. The IFP also distanced itself from the ANC's use of violence.

Throughout his career, Buthelezi was a polarizing figure. He faced allegations of collaboration with the apartheid government and was accused of being responsible for the deaths of many ANC supporters. Simultaneously, he maintained a loyal following among the Zulu population, who perceived him as a defender of their cultural and political rights.

In 1994, as South Africa transitioned to democracy, Buthelezi and the IFP participated in the country's first democratic elections. The IFP secured 10% of the vote, making it the second-largest party in parliament, although Buthelezi declined to join the ANC-led government.

Buthelezi continued to be a vocal critic of the ANC government, accusing it of corruption and neglecting Zulu interests. However, he also collaborated with the government on certain issues, such as the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Buthelezi's legacy is multifaceted, reflecting his role as both a champion of Zulu culture and rights and a figure accused of complicity with the apartheid regime. His influence on South African politics was substantial, and his passing carries several implications:
