Ex-Nigerian gov't official to share in $11bn gas scandal damages

In the event that Nigeria loses the case, the country would be legally obligated to remunerate P&ID an amount that is eight times its federal health budget for 2023. This case has been ongoing for several years and has been the subject of considerable controversy and deliberation.

Background: The case revolves around a contract between the Nigerian government and a company known as Process and Industrial Developments (P&ID) for the construction of a gas processing facility within the country. Although the contract was signed in 2010, the project never materialized. P&ID filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian government for breaching the contract, and in 2017, a London court awarded the company $6.6 billion in damages.

Appeal: The Nigerian government appealed the ruling, but in 2020, a UK court upheld the decision and increased the damages to $10 billion.

Involvement of the former official: The former Nigerian government official, whose identity remains undisclosed, is alleged to have received a bribe of $2.5 million from P&ID in connection with the gas processing plant contract. The official has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
