Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa Sets New Women's Marathon World Record in Berlin

Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa has set a new women's marathon world record at the Berlin Marathon on Sunday, September 24, 2023. Assefa broke the previous record by more than two minutes, finishing the race in 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 4 seconds.

Assefa's record-breaking performance was a surprise even to herself. She had targeted a new world record, but she did not expect to break it by such a significant margin. Assefa's previous personal best was 2 hours, 17 minutes, and 41 seconds, which she set at the Dubai Marathon in 2022.

The previous women's marathon world record was held by Brigid Kosgei of Kenya, who ran the Chicago Marathon in 2019 in 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 4 seconds. Assefa's new record is more than two minutes faster than Kosgei's time.

Assefa's victory in Berlin was her first major marathon win. She finished ahead of Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich, who finished second in 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 12 seconds, and Ethiopia's Ruti Aga, who finished third in 2 hours, 17 minutes, and 3 seconds.

The Berlin Marathon is one of the six World Marathon Majors, along with the Boston, Chicago, London, New York, and Tokyo Marathons. The race attracts elite runners from around the world and is known for its fast course, which has produced several world records over the years.

Assefa's world record-breaking performance is a testament to the growing dominance of Ethiopian runners in long-distance running. Ethiopia has produced some of the world's best long-distance runners, including Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele, and Tirunesh Dibaba.

Assefa's achievement is also a source of pride for Ethiopia, a country that has faced political and economic challenges in recent years. The Ethiopian government has invested heavily in sports, including long-distance running, as a way to promote national unity and pride.

Assefa's world record-breaking performance is likely to inspire a new generation of Ethiopian runners and cement Ethiopia's position as a powerhouse in long-distance running.

Tigst Assefa's new women's marathon world record is a remarkable achievement that has captured the attention of the world. Assefa's performance is a testament to her talent, hard work, and determination, and it is a source of pride for Ethiopia and the entire African continent. Assefa's record-breaking performance is likely to inspire a new generation of runners and cement Ethiopia's position as a dominant force in long-distance running.
