Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) formally requested the United Nations to withdraw its troops

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has formally requested the United Nations (UN) to withdraw its troops, citing their failure to adequately protect civilians. This request follows years of criticism directed towards the UN's peacekeeping mission in the country, known as MONUSCO, for its inability to effectively curb violence and safeguard the civilian population.

While acknowledging the DRC's request, a senior UN official has emphasized the importance of ensuring that the withdrawal of MONUSCO does not create security vacuums that could potentially jeopardize the protection of civilians. The UN has been actively engaged in a gradual withdrawal process from the DRC, but it is crucial that this process is carried out responsibly and in accordance with the prevailing conditions on the ground.

President Felix Tshisekedi of the DRC has also expressed his desire for the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers this year, citing their perceived inability to effectively address the rebellions and armed conflicts within the country. MONUSCO, which assumed control from a previous UN operation in 2010, was initially deployed to address the insecurity prevalent in the eastern region of the DRC, where armed groups engage in territorial and resource-based conflicts. However, the mission has faced increasing public discontent in recent years due to allegations of its failure to adequately protect civilians from violence, leading to deadly protests.

The United Nations (UN) has consistently provided operational, logistical, and tactical assistance to the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). However, it is regrettable to note that the security situation in the eastern region of the country has persistently worsened. Various armed groups have ruthlessly targeted and murdered innocent civilians, exacerbating the already dire circumstances. Furthermore, the March 23 Movement (M23) has reignited hostilities and expanded its dominance over Rutshuru territory in North Kivu.

In light of the escalating tensions and clashes within the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the government has formally requested the withdrawal of UN troops. This development has raised concerns within the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which is deeply troubled by the prevailing situation and has unequivocally called for an immediate cessation of violence.

While the UN has been actively engaged in a gradual withdrawal of its troops from the DRC, it is imperative that this process be executed responsibly and contingent upon the prevailing conditions on the ground. Regrettably, the security situation in the eastern region of the country continues to deteriorate, with armed groups persistently perpetrating violence against innocent civilians. The DRC's request for the withdrawal of UN troops is a direct response to the escalating tensions and clashes that have engulfed the nation.
